Sand Dollar has been designated as a Critical
Wildlife Area by the Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission and is protected by law
because the sandy beaches, dunes and mudflats
provide valuable resting, nesting and feeding
grounds for over 60 species of resident and migratory
coastal birds. This Critical Wildlife Area and
adjacent Tigertail Beach is one of the two most
important coastal bird sites on the west coast
of Florida, and one of the ten most important
birding sites on the east coast of the United
States! However, it is not just about the birds.
Fish, clams, crabs, snails of every type live
in the area, 40,000 organisms per cubic inch of
mud! At low tide, the place is magical!
